The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) revealed today its price for purchasing wheat from local farmers for the upcoming harvest season, which is about to start.

The price is 28% higher than that set by the government in Damascus.

In previous harvests, the opposite used to be the case: Damascus prices used to be higher to incentivize the farmers from AANES areas to take the hassle of selling their crop on the opposite end of the country.

Much of Syria's wheat production comes from AANES-controlled areas.

Given the bad weather conditions and the continued economic deterioration in regime areas, expect the bread shortages from last year to reappear.

It's not that there are hurdles to importing from abroad because of the sanctions. There's simply no money.
